Lobbying the EU

The European Parliament's Revolving Door

08.06.2011

The Lisbon Treaty, introduced in 2009, substantially increased the Parliament’s legislative power, making MEPs even more attractive to consultancy firms. The Parliament can now accept, amend or reject the content of European legislation that affects every European – making its decision makers worth knowing. Its new powers mean that greater scrutiny, transparency and accountability are required to minimize any potential conflict of interest and corruption.

Food lobby bashes MEPs on labelling

17.04.2011

Once again, the issue of food labelling is on the table in the European Parliament, and is at the core of heated debate. Breaking all etiquette rules, leaflets were placed on MEPs desks urging them to vote agains certain amendments to the Food Information proposal. MEPs across the political spectrum have denounced the aggressive industry lobbying. The Environment Committee of the European Parliament is due to vote on the issue on Tuesday 19 April.
