BBC World Service: The Price of Biofuels

BBC World Service made an excellent radio documentary on the growing use of 'biofuels', and the impact in the South: Paraguay and its expanding soy plantations. BBC website: "Once, bio fuels were seen as the answer to global warming and dwindling oil stocks. Today, many who took that view, believe instead that they increase pollution - and are behind worldwide environmental havoc, rising food prices, and worsening hunger and poverty. For this documentary, investigative reporter Gerry Northam finds out exactly how much bio fuels cost and who is paying for it. He visits Paraguay, where the expansion of the soy industry has happened in tandem with the violent suppression of small farmers and indigenous communities." In Part Two of this radio documentary, broadcasted May 3rd 2010, Corporate Europe Observatory comments both on the situation in Paraguay, and on the way the agrofuel lobby in Brussels is trying to further delute the EU's so-called 'sustainability criteria'. Listen to Part one: Listen to Part two:
Civil society groups denounce the Commission's plan for a Capital Markets Union. No lesson has been learnt from the financial crisis, they say.
Discover the hidden world of well-resourced dirty energy lobbyists
The car manufacturing industry is traditionally one of Brussels' strongest, and has a particularly German flavour. But the recent scandal engulfing Volkswagen (VW – who also make Audi) and potentially others shows that if Europe is serious about regulating the car industry and protecting public health and the climate, it needs to stand up to the car lobby rather than allowing those resisting regulation to write it.
Spare a thought for big business lobbyists who are apparently “less successful than citizen groups at lobbying EU legislators” according to this research.
