Seminar on the Impacts of Agrofuel
In June 2007, Global Forest Coalition, Corporate Europe Observatory and
Friends of the Earth Europe organised four days of events on agrofuels,
including debates in the European Parliament and the Dutch Parliament.
Fifteen representatives from Southern organisations and movements were
in Europe to testify on the impacts that EU agrofuel policy will have
on their countries.This report is a record of their testimonies.
Séralini vs Fellous: a GMO libel case
On 23rd November there was an action to support Gilles-Eric Séralini’s court case, against Marc Fellous of the Association Française des Biotechnologies Végétales (AFBV) for libel. The case is being heard in the ‘Tribunal de Grande Instance’, in the historic Palais de Justice on the Ile de la Cité, Paris. Séralini is a leading researcher into the risks of GMOs.
European Parliament cracks down on EFSA
On 27 March, the Budget committee voted on an excellent report by MEP Monica Luisa Macovei (PPE, Romania), proposing to postpone the approval of the 2010 budget of the European Food Safety Authority. Macovei stated that "conflicts of interest could .. have a negative impact on the impartiality of the decision-making process and also on the citizens' trust in the institutions". The vote in Plenary is scheduled on 10 May 2012.
Sugarcane ethanol is not sustainable
Corporate Europe Observatory’s new briefing, "Sugarcane ethanol: a sweet solution for Europe's fuel addiction?", highlights the impacts of sugarcane production in Brazil, including harsh working conditions and the destruction of some of Brazil’s most important forests and wildlife habitats.
